When a company or individual creator files for a patent, this is a way to ensure that they are the only retailer, and that when the consumer buys that product, they are going to be getting the genuine product they paid for, and not a knock off which is produced by a scammer. And as a inventor or corporation who has created the product, you want to get a patent so that you are credited with the creation, and every time the product is sold or traded, you are going to get the money you deserve, due to the fact that you are the creator of the product. So, as a patent is requested, if a product is extremely valuable, and is going to be a big money maker for an inventor, you have to consider filing for a patent immediately, so that a scammer will not come around and try to take title to your product. As a consumer, you will also know that you are getting the genuine product when you buy it.
